DECEMBER FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER

(THE FREAKY FROGS)

The winter season is here and the snow is already falling, so get out your winter wear to be prepared! I hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving break and relaxed a little bit. Many different celebrations will be shared this month with friends and families and I wish you all a safe and happy holiday! Students filled up the marble jar, due to their teamwork together as a class! They will be rewarded on Thursday, December 6th. They are going to vote on what their reward is. I am very proud of them!

Important dates to remember for the month of December:

  1. No school on Friday, December 7th (professional development for teachers)
  2. Holiday Party on Friday, December 21st (more information about this event will be sent out later in the month)
  3. Winter Break: December 24-January 4th
  4. There will be no spelling the week of December 17th-21st. Also, there will be no homework over the Winter Break.

I would like to thank you for attending parent-teacher conferences to learn about your child’s progress so far this year.
The temperature outside is colder and so they need a winter jacket,
gloves and a hat. It is very important that they dress for the weather.
*  We are wrapping up our social studies unit on the United States and their Regions. Students are working on their travel brochure to present to the class on December 12, 2007. I will let you know the time once I know how many parents are joining us. Students need to be thinking about what props they are going to need to dress up as a tour guide for their state.
*  We are finishing up our science unit on cells and the human body this Tuesday. Our students worked together in groups to make the different body systems. They are displayed on the bulletin board outside our classroom, come and see! Our next unit is Classification and Adaptation.
*  We are almost through our division unit in math and hopefully in a couple of weeks we will be starting our next unit, which is prime factorization.
*  Students will be making a gift for a loved one. Students need to bring in $2.00 to cover the cost of the gift. Students need to hand in their money by December 14, 2007. Please let me know if you have any questions.
*  Students have been doing a great job with their buddy readers in the first grade classroom! Every Friday students read to their buddy reader(s) or make a craft with them. Ask your child about it!
     *  Our Student of the Month for December is Desire Smith! She has been working hard to complete assignments. She recognizes the importance of education and she has been pushing herself to be the best that she can be. She is also a great friend to her classmates! Great job, Desire!
     *  For the month of November, four students reached their goal in the BOOK-IT! Program! Isis, Chazz, Brice, and Noah all met their goal, way to go!
*  Happy Birthday to Noah because he is celebrating a birthday this month!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please stop in and see me.
Mrs. Smith
